Artist's Statement
My expressionistic paintings, drawings and assemblages are inspired by strong emotions and explorations I have about life and the world, in part by my efforts to overcome personal medical challenges and the struggles women face with identity and objectification. Furthermore, I depict subjects of nature, which have a spiritual meaning for me and transcend the struggles of body and mind. The materials I use to create my works include oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolor, charcoal, pastels. found objects and lipstick. The idea of using lipstick as an immediate art tool developed while attending graduate school for my Masters of Fine Arts in painting. When beginning an art piece I am aware of what is most compelling in my life at that time and I use that inspiration to find a subject to work from, or the image I am encountered with draws out my reaction. I use that emotion to begin spontaneously creating my work. I continue my gestures as long as they remain energetic. Then I stop to observe my creation and make formal alterations before returning to my expressive process. My new art includes a series of self-portraits
beginning in childhood and other compelling subjects. These works are painted
with oils and lipstick.
